Peptides, Collagen and Wrinkles

Peptides and collagen go hand in hand when it comes to wrinkles, why we have them and how to battle them. Understanding what peptides are, and how they work, is crucial to maintaining healthier, younger looking skin.

Peptides consist of a short chain of amino acids. They are so closely related to proteins that if the chain is any longer than approximately 50 amino acids, they are actually called proteins. These chains of peptides/proteins are part of every living cell in the body. They can be both natural and synthetically made. Peptides in skincare products are usually synthetic because chemists have more control over their effectiveness.

Peptides are able to penetrate the skin's top layer and relay instructions to the body’s cells about its various functions.

About Collagen

Collagen is a protein in the skin formed by peptides. It gives skin its suppleness and firmness and is a kind of support system under the skin.

Sun and stress breaks down collagen, while collagen production slows each year as we age so there is less of it. These factors allows wrinkles to form – the support system holding up skin lessens.

When peptides are applied to aging skin, they penetrate the top layer and act as a newly broken down collagen chain, and instruct the cells to produce more collagen.

Peptides are easily manipulated. Because of this, the products used with peptides and the type of peptides used on the skin must be chosen carefully to obtain the desired results. There are specific peptides products that stimulate collagen building such as Matrixyl and Trylagen while Argireline helps to relax wrinkles.

There are specific peptide chains most often used in skin care products; acetyl hexapeptide-3, palmitoyl pentapeptide-3 and palmitoyl oligopeptide. Copper peptides are also helpful though dermatologists do not approve of copper peptides for wrinkle treatment as they have far better wound healing properties.

The Effects Of Peptides

Acetyl hexapeptide-3 relaxes facial wrinkles somewhat like botox injections, do but covers the entire face as opposed to just the injection sites. It is also known as Argireline. Several of our products feature Argireline, including Face Whisperer® Day Cream, Face Whisperer® Neck & Decollete Cream and the Ageless Line Smoother.

Matrixyl steps up collagen production and stimulates deeper layers of the skin and can even help heal wounds. It is our favorite peptide at Sublime Beauty®! Our Collagen Peptide Serum, Ageless line of 3 serums, the Face Whisperer® Night Cream and Advanced Eye Gel include Matrixyl.

The special peptide compound Trylagen is found in our Face Whisperer® Day Cream. Trylagen not only steps up collagen production, but protects what is formed.

Using Peptides

Peptides are not a miracle or immediate fix, but the effects can be impressive with daily use.

Typically those changes are seen within four to twelve weeks. Don’t forget: once you stop applying a peptide cream to your skin, the effects begin to disappear.
